Beware the Hype Machine

I may have just dropped $60+ on a game because of nothing more than it’s hype. The game is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and I really enjoyed myself with it’s prequel. Now, I am uncertain as to whether or not this was a complete waste of my money, but it was definitely a sharp reminder to, at all costs, avoid the hype machine as hype does nothing but discredit a logical, informed decision as to whether you should spend your money. knowledgehype

Here are a few reasons to sharply scrutinize extraordinarily hyped games or products:

  • Hype is a marketer’s tool, it is used in conjunction with carefully implemented teasers and reviews. This is not an attempt to provide you with a quality product or service, but merely a media oriented device to increase sales dollars.
  • Hype colors your expectations of a product, allowing your imagination to take flight of what it will be like in the future. This can be harmful to the serious buyer, the buyer who typically only buys when he or she is sure that he or she will get the product imagined. gossipcare
  • Hype is quicksand, if you give it an inch, it will take your whole body, and mind with no remorse. Hype is like a self-oxidizing flame, it constantly feeds itself to grow larger and larger. Hype is akin to corruption in that it spreads until it controls your mind.

With this in mind, use this knowledge to ward off the hype attacks so that you can avoid making a bad decision about buying a product. I’m sure we all know how bad it feels to fall victim to this kind of marketing strategy, but if you can recognize the signs you can help yourself to make powerful, informed decisions in the face of the deceptive hype machine.
